Gordon Peterson: "Man Of The Avenues"

This is Gordon Peterson. Neighbor, close friend, and struggling homosexual with a tiny, tiny pee-pee. These are a few shots taken in his new home on 3rd Avenue in downtown Salt Lake. Probably as close as you can get to “cool” in Utah.

Informal Tovey Family Reunion

Here are some shots from when all my brothers & sisters were in town for my wedding. We gathered up at Wendy’s house in Heber City, UT and took some family pics in the backyard. Some of my favorites, as one can see, come from when Doug, Wendy, and Mom were my models as I played with the lighting.

Here’s a lovely one of Nancy (Sister).

Yes, Yes Y’all And Ya Don’t Stop… Starting New Blogs

I take a lot of pitchers and usually just end up posting them on my flickr account. Which is fine. But I’ve been very unsatisfied with it. I started a flickr account to archive my photos in another place and put them up for friends and family to see since they are in many of them. What’s happened is I post anywhere from 30 to 75 images from a shoot. That’s nice, but I need to learn to pick the 1 or 3 best shots from a shoot. It has more impact. One day, if all goes well and I’m shooting for the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine I’m not going to get away with a 50 image montage cause, “I can’t choose just ONE!”

I have a photography website and I have a blog. Why not use one of those?

Reason #1. My photography site takes a lot of work to update with new photos and I feel an immense amount of pressure to choose my “best” stuff. Which is why it hasn’t changed in 8 months. In an effort to get better at choosing my “best” work (for an explanation of why I keep putting best in quotes please google the phrase “what is art?” and delve into the discussion on the subjective nature of artistic expression and what constitutes it being good or bad) I will attempt to use this blog. Then on a semi-annual basis I can choose the best ones to update my real photography site. (These days I’m not sure what the difference is, but oh well.)

Reason #2. My other blog has turned into what it is: a place for me to be condescending and vomit my half-baked theories and whimsical observations and complaints about the world and life around me. Should you choose to visit it,
I warn you it’s replete with slipshod writing, banal content, jarring cliches, and perhaps the worse part… often frequented by lesser human beings. Anyway, I wanted a place to post photos I’ve taken that I’m proud of and perhaps tell the story behind them. Like VH1 Storytellers without the fame to justify it. Paid or personal shoots will be fair game so long as i have my camera in hand; family reunions, baby showers, Hispanic real estate magazine cover shoots, weddings, and concerts are all fair game. And you can look for these posts in the near future. Not only will this give me a way to narrow down my favorite shots from these events, but will encourage me to take my camera along more in the future. I imagine it being a way more autobiographical blog than Lesser Human Beings.

More to Come…
